Plot summary
For seven years Roz has been the girlfriend of Frank O'Brien, a small-time thief. The painting they have taken is a Matisse, and the two argue inside a stolen car while police cars follow. Told it is worth a hundred thousand dollars, they expect ten thousand on delivery in two days. They leave the car for a train and a ferry to Rhode Island, where the handover is meant to happen. A family is away for the weekend, so the couple let themselves into the empty house. A neighbor, Evan Marsh, drops by, and Roz invents a story for him, naming the homeowner's son after seeing a postcard. Evan invites them to a party, and Roz finds the stolen painting in a book of art and quarrels with Frank over another job he has agreed to take.
