Plot summary
Steve Everett works as a reporter in Oakland and is trying to stay off alcohol. His paper gives him the assignment of covering the execution of Frank Beechum, who is on death row for killing Amy Wilson, a pregnant woman who owed him ninety-six dollars. The colleague who had the story before, Michelle Ziegler, has died. As Everett looks into the case, he questions the account of Dale Porterhouse, a witness who said he saw Beechum with a gun. The execution is set for midnight, and Everett's editors are unhappy with him. Alan Mann, the paper's top editor, says a call to the Governor could stop the execution if Everett brings him proof.
