Plot summary
Bill Tyler is a patient in a psychiatric hospital ward, where he has woken from a coma talking about tissue regeneration, organ transplants, final injections and a cryonics experiment. He believes a society in the future has unfrozen him and will put him to death. Flashbacks of his father's death and of a car crash break in, along with hallucinations and fits of rage. Ann Johnson, a lonely medical psychologist, is sent to judge whether he should be released. Their sessions are confrontational and charged, and Bill shifts between precise readings of his own state and ideas about bio-technology. Behind the coma lie a broken engagement and a drunken drive.
