Plot summary
Aboard a train, David looks back on his childhood in a small town in Georgia in the 1940s, first at the age of ten and later at fifteen. His father, Frank, is abusive. At home with him are his mother, Sarah, and his Aunt Mae, a singer. Frank leaves to fight in the Second World War, and David becomes the one who cares for his mother, with Aunt Mae beside them.
