Claire Bloom
Biography
Claire Bloom is an English actress whose stage and screen work has earned two BAFTA Awards, an Emmy, and a Drama Desk Award, and who was appointed a CBE for services to drama. Born in Finchley, she studied drama in London and made her London stage debut at sixteen, playing Shakespearean roles including Ophelia in Hamlet. Her film debut came in The Blind Goddess (1948), and she broke through opposite Charlie Chaplin in Limelight (1952), winning a BAFTA for Most Promising Newcomer. She went on to appear in Richard III (1955), Alexander the Great (1956), The Brothers Karamazov (1958), The Haunting (1963), The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965), Charly (1968), A Doll's House (1973), and Clash of the Titans (1981). For Shadowlands (1985) she won a BAFTA for Best Actress. Later films include Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) and The King's Speech (2010), while her television work includes Brideshead Revisited (1981) and The Mirror Crack'd (1992).
