Biography

Laurence Harvey was a Lithuanian-born British actor and director who worked in theater, film and television in Britain and the United States. Born in Joniškis, he grew up in Johannesburg and settled in Britain after World War II. He trained briefly at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made his film debut in House of Darkness (1948). His breakthrough came with the role of Joe Lampton, an ambitious man on the make, in Room at the Top (1958), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Known for a clipped accent and a cool, debonair screen persona, he appeared in The Alamo (1960), BUtterfield 8 (1960), Summer and Smoke (1961), The Manchurian Candidate (1962), The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962), The Running Man (1963), Darling (1965) and Life at the Top (1965). He made his directing debut with The Ceremony (1963) and completed A Dandy in Aspic (1968).

A change of course
At fifteen, Harvey tried out for the South African Army's Entertainment Unit during the Second World War. Sid James ran that unit and gave his approval to the audition.
Early training
Harvey moved to London and enrolled at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, but he left RADA after three months.
About the name
Harvey's stage name came from talent agent Gordon Harbord, who picked Laurence as a first name and thought of Harvey Nichols and Harrods for a British-sounding surname.
A role that slipped away
Harvey declined a role in the 1955 film Helen of Troy so he could act at Stratford-upon-Avon, where he took the stage in Romeo and Juliet.
Beyond film
Harvey recorded spoken excerpts from Walter Benton's book This Is My Beloved, set to original music by Herbie Mann, and the Atlantic label released the album.
