Plot summary
Jimmy Porter and his wife Alison live in a shabby attic flat in a Midlands industrial town, shared with Cliff, Jimmy's closest friend and his partner in the market stall. Both men graduated from university, yet the stall brings in very little, and Jimmy's failure to rise in the world leaves him furious at society and at anyone in authority. He aims that fury at Alison, a submissive woman from an upper-middle-class family, because she has never known want or pain. Alison is pregnant, and Jimmy does not know it. She invites her friend Helena, whom Jimmy loathes, to stay in the flat.

- John Osborne insisted on Tony Richardson as director despite producer Harry Saltzman's resistance, even though Richardson had never made a feature film. The film's original backer, J. Arthur Rank, pulled out of the deal because of the choice of director.
- Harry Saltzman and Tony Richardson persuaded Richard Burton to play Jimmy Porter for a fee far lower than his usual Hollywood pay: $125,000.
- The street outside Jimmy and Alison Porter's flat was a real London road, Harvist Road in N7, which Islington Borough Council later demolished and rebuilt as the Harvist Estate.
- The part of the doctor was created specially for George Devine, artistic director of the English Stage Company, the man Osborne most owed for his success.
