Albert Salmi
Biography
Albert Salmi was an American actor who worked on stage, in film, and on television, best known for the character parts he played across more than 150 productions. Born and raised in Brooklyn as the son of Finnish immigrants, he turned to acting after serving in the Army, training in method acting at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg. Critics praised his 1955 performance as Bo Decker in the Broadway production of Bus Stop, and he declined to repeat the role in the 1956 film. Television occupied much of his career, from a live adaptation of Bang the Drum Slowly to several Twilight Zone episodes, and a 1967 Gunsmoke performance earned him a Western Heritage Award. He played Pete Ritter in the legal drama Petrocelli from 1974 to 1976. Later screen roles came in the Robert Redford prison film Brubaker (1980) and in Dragonslayer (1981) as Greil. He died in 1990.

A role that slipped away
Salmi turned down the chance to reprise his Broadway role as Bo Decker in the 1956 film Bus Stop opposite Marilyn Monroe because he did not enjoy film work.
Early training
After serving in the United States Army, Salmi chose acting as a career. He studied method acting with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio in Manhattan.
Behind the award
Salmi appeared in a 1967 Gunsmoke episode as a killer whose fate is ironic, and he received a Western Heritage Award for that performance.
