Plot summary
Helen Ayers and her son Sammy board a bus out of Birmingham, Alabama, hoping for a better life; Helen keeps a surprise from the boy and tells him to be quiet. At a rest stop she is murdered and the bus pulls away without her. Sammy sleeps until the end of the line, Barrington, Georgia, and says nothing. The driver assumes he is deaf and abandoned. Norm Jenkins, the terminal manager, gives him a bed, and Lucille, who owns and cooks at the terminal cafe, looks after him. When Tolliver Tynan sets off a cherry bomb beside him and Sammy does not flinch, the town is certain he cannot hear. Sammy decides the silence protects him and keeps it, listening to everything said around him.
