Timothy West

Biography

Timothy West was an English actor whose career spanned theater, film, and television. Born in Bradford, England, he began in repertory in the 1950s and made his London stage debut in 1959. He spent three seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1960s, appearing as King Lear on four occasions and as Macbeth twice. He was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award in 1978 for The Homecoming. His breakthrough screen role was King Edward VII in the 1975 television series Edward the Seventh, which earned him a BAFTA nomination; a second came in 1980. His films included Nicholas and Alexandra (1971), The Thirty Nine Steps (1978), Cry Freedom (1987), and Iris (2001). He starred in Brass from 1982 to 1990 and Bedtime from 2001 to 2003, and he won a Royal Television Society award for Churchill and the Generals. He directed for the theater and was appointed CBE in 1984.

First role
West made his London stage debut in 1959 at the Piccadilly Theatre in the farce Caught Napping, after repertory seasons in Newquay, Hull, Northampton, Worthing and Salisbury.
Behind the camera
West wrote and produced a short audio play in 1959 called This Gun That I Have in My Right Hand Is Loaded. It poked fun at common radio drama errors, such as sound cues used wrongly and dialogue that explains too much.
A change of course
In 1962, West joined the BBC Radio Drama Repertory Company. During his time there, he appeared in over 500 radio broadcasts.
Behind the camera
In 1973, West served as artistic director of the Forum Theatre in Billingham. His directing credits there included Joseph Heller's We Bombed in New Haven, David Livingstone's The Oz Obscenity Trial and Peter Nichols's The National Health.
Beyond film
In 2004, West went on an Australian tour with the Carl Rosa Opera Company, directing H.M.S. Pinafore and also singing the part of Sir Joseph Porter.
