Plot summary
On the backroads of America, Carl carries a body covered in skin illustrations, and he insists on that name for them. Staring at one directly brings its story to life, and he tells those tales to Willie, a traveler he meets, with his dog Peke along. One illustration shows a nursery that builds whatever children imagine. Another follows astronauts on Venus, where the rain never stops and they search for shelter. A third concerns a night when every adult on Earth shares the same vision of the end. Carl says he is looking for Felicia, a mysterious woman he met in a remote farmhouse, after which he came to be tattooed.

- Ray Bradbury was not consulted for the film adaptation of his own story collection. Director Jack Smight picked only three of the book's eighteen stories and built the film around the carnival sideshow freak from the collection's prologue and epilogue.
