Plot summary
The widowed King rides out on affairs of state, and Princess Irene stays with her nursemaid. Out in a forest she is cornered by misshapen animals, which flee when someone sings. The singer is Curdie, a miner's son, who tells her the creatures are goblins and that song drives them off. In the kingdom, only the King and his family are unaware that goblins exist; the King takes them for old miners' tales. A magic door in Irene's room opens onto a tower, where the spirit of her ancestor, also named Irene, tells her that grave danger is coming. Meanwhile Curdie falls through a pothole into the goblins' realm and, hidden, listens as the Goblin King and Goblin Queen announce a scheme to flood the mines.
