Plot summary
Dr. George C. Chapman and his assistant Paul Radford travel the country asking women anonymous questions about their sex lives, and they come to Los Angeles to recruit volunteers in Briarwood, an affluent community. Fewer women attend the Women's Club meeting than expected because Dr. Jonas campaigns against the project, arguing that the survey separates sex from affection and that its probing questions may stir up trouble for the women who answer. Four participants take part: Kathleen Barclay, a young widow whose late husband told her she was frigid and who believes him; Teresa Harnish, a vivacious wife who records her interview to play back for her husband; Sarah Garnell, a middle-aged wife and mother with a young lover; and Naomi Shields, a divorcée who drinks and pursues men.

- At the Legion of Decency's insistence, Jack Warner had Michael A. Hoey re-edit the film and write a different ending, with Zimbalist and Duggan saying that American women were rather normal sexually, a message at odds with the rest of Cukor's film. A different director was brought in to reshoot it.
- Costume designer Orry-Kelly dressed each of the different female characters in only one color throughout the film, so that every woman on screen keeps her own single shade.
