Plot summary

Pili and her older brother Ioane live in Brooklyn, where Pili is an avid geocacher. She wins tuition to a Catskills summer camp, but the family instead moves to Oʻahu, where their mother Leilani must help her father Kimo with his health and money troubles. Pili takes an old diary from the bus that serves as Kimo's art studio and meets a local boy, Casper, who covers for her, while Ioane is distracted by Hana, Casper's friend. The diary belonged to Monks, quartermaster of a Peruvian ship whose privateers Robinson and Brown mutinied, burned their vessel and carried treasure ashore. Kimo catches Pili with the diary and takes her to the landmarks it names, but a fall breaks his rib. With Leilani at the hospital, Pili and Casper slip away to hunt the treasure, and Ioane and Hana follow.
