Plot summary
In 1962, Barbara Novak arrives in New York to bring out her book Down with Love, which tells women they can be free of love, enjoy sex without commitment, and put chocolate in a man's place. The men who run Banner House publishing are unimpressed, and her editor Vikki Hiller proposes that she work with Catcher Block of Know magazine on publicity. Catcher keeps dodging her until, fed up, Barbara insults him. After the title song is sung on The Ed Sullivan Show, sales take off and women in many countries turn against their men. When Barbara names Catcher on national television as the worst sort of man, the women he dates reject him, and he plots to show that she wants love and marriage like anyone else.
