Plot summary
Halloween is close in Wardenclyffe, New York, where Sarah Quinn is finishing her college application and her younger brother Sonny makes pocket money with his friend Sam Carter, hunting for valuables in other people's throwaways. Sam is staying at the Quinn house while his parents are away. In an abandoned house that belonged to R. L. Stine, the boys find a manuscript nobody published, open it, and bring Slappy the Dummy to life. A bully, Tommy Madigan, takes the manuscript from them.

- Two scripts were written for Goosebumps 2: in one, Jack Black would have reprised his role, while the other cut Black out entirely; Ari Sandel took over as director from Rob Letterman, who left to make Detective Pikachu.
- Jack Black and Odeya Rush were both set to reprise their roles from the first film, but Black's return as R. L. Stine went uncredited and Rush's character, Hannah Fairchild, was dropped from the final script altogether.
- One scene uses action figures modeled after Ryu and Ken Masters from Capcom's Street Fighter series; when Slappy brings them to life, they emit pre-existing voice clips taken from the source material.
