Plot summary
Lenny Cantrow sells sporting goods in New York City and is shallow and self-absorbed. He marries Lila Kolodny after a brief courtship, though she is earnest and wants a lasting commitment from him. They go to Miami Beach for their honeymoon, where Lenny finds that habits he tolerated while courting her now irritate him. He meets Kelly Corcoran, a college student whose wealthy parents have brought her there, and pursues her. When Lila is severely sunburned, he keeps her in their hotel room and spends the time with Kelly instead, telling her he has waited his whole life for someone like her.
