Plot summary
In 1868, reports of a sea creature destroying ships in the Pacific stir alarm among sailors, and the U.S. government asks Professor Pierre M. Aronnax and his assistant Conseil to join an armed frigate's expedition. Master harpooner Ned Land sails with them. Months pass before the vessel is sighted; it rams the frigate, which is left crippled. Ned, Aronnax and Conseil end up in the water, then come upon a metal craft and realize a man built it. Its crew captures them, and the man in command gives his name as Nemo and calls his craft the Nautilus. He offers Aronnax the chance to stay aboard; when Aronnax chooses to share his companions' fate, Nemo lets all three remain.

- For the giant squid attack, the crew scrapped the first version of the sequence, shot at dusk in a calm sea, and filmed it again at night during a humongous thunderstorm, both to increase the drama and to better hide the cables and mechanical workings of the animatronic squid.
- Art director Harper Goff designed the Nautilus submarine and the film won the Academy Award for Art Direction, but Goff himself could not accept his own Oscar because he was not a member of the Art Directors Union, which barred him under Academy bylaws.
- James Mason's on-screen organ playing as Captain Nemo, performing Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, was not really his own; the music was dubbed by an anonymous organist.
