Plot summary
George Maitlin, a Beverly Hills psychiatrist with a radio show, has a breakdown after an affair with a patient and leaves for a sabbatical in London. His lawyer, Harvey Michaels, is told to find a temporary replacement who will not outshine him. In Chicago, John Burns, a patient at a state correctional mental facility, embarrasses its chief doctor, Lawrence Baird, by talking a suicidal man down from a ledge after Baird fails. Lawrence arranges to send John to Joliet Prison, believing he is faking insanity to dodge a four-year sentence. John takes a phone call meant for Lawrence, poses as him, accepts the radio job, and flies to Beverly Hills on Lawrence's ticket. There Dr. Laura Rollins meets him, and Donald Becker, a former priest, spots his prison pants.
