Plot summary
Dan Emmett leaves Kentucky for New Orleans to prove himself as an actor and songwriter. On the riverboat he meets the entertainer Mr. Bones, who wins his five hundred dollars at cards. In New Orleans Dan demands the money back, and Bones, denying the swindle, offers him a place in his act instead. Unable to pay for a restaurant meal, the two are beaten and left with black eyes. They take rooms at the boarding house run by Mr. Cook and his daughter Millie, where the rent is overdue. When the local Maxwell Theatre offers Bones a tryout, Millie insists that all four boarders appear, and suggests black make-up to cover their bruises. The act succeeds, the troupe grows into a twenty-four artist minstrel show, and Millie falls for Dan, who tells her about Jean back home.
