Plot summary
Harry Turner and Chester Babcock earn money in Calcutta selling a kit for do-it-yourself interplanetary flight, until the kit injures Chester and leaves him with amnesia. A doctor tells him that only the monks of a lamasery in Tibet can restore his memory. There the lamas cure him and give him a tea leaf that grants a photographic memory; Harry takes a bottle of it, intending to turn the gift to profit. At the airport, Chester has picked up the wrong suitcase, which is the contact point for a spy ring called the Third Echelon. Its agent Diane takes him for the courier meant to carry stolen Russian rocket fuel plans, and offers the pair money to meet her in Hong Kong.

- The lead in this Road picture went to Joan Collins instead of Dorothy Lamour because Bing Crosby thought Lamour, 48, was too old, but Bob Hope refused to make the film without her; her singing cameo was the compromise.
- To preserve the feel of the 1940s and '50s Road films, The Road to Hong Kong was shot in black and white, even though the previous entry, Road to Bali, had been made in color.
- The lamasery where Bob Hope's Chester goes to restore his memory was not built for this film but reused from Black Narcissus.
