Plot summary
Bill Benson and Ted Adams are entertainers who are to appear together in a new Broadway show. Each man travels separately to Europe to find the ideal leading lady for the production's single female role. Bill meets the dancer Patsy Blair and signs her for the part, while Ted signs the dancer Gaby Duval to the same role, neither knowing what the other has done. Both men bring their own discoveries aboard the liner back to the United States, and the crossing turns rough when each has to tell his own choice that the role may not be hers after all.

- The 1956 Anything Goes was drastically rewritten from the stage musical: it replaces most of the original characters and follows a new plot, sharing with the show almost nothing but some songs, a ship crossing the Atlantic and the title.
- Five of Cole Porter's best-known songs, among them "Anything Goes", "You're the Top" and "I Get a Kick Out of You", were kept with updated arrangements, while his lesser-known numbers were cut completely and replaced by new songs written by Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn.
