Plot summary
The socialite Tracy Samantha Lord is preparing to marry George Kittredge at her family's Newport, Rhode Island estate. Next door, her ex-husband C. K. Dexter-Haven, a successful singer and composer, is arranging jazz performances for the Newport Jazz Festival and remains in love with her. The tabloid Spy holds damaging information about Tracy's father, Seth Lord, so the family agrees to let its reporter, Mike Connor, and its photographer, Liz Imbrie, cover the wedding and keep the story out of print. Tracy resents their arrival and stages a charade, passing her Uncle Willie off as her father. On the eve of the wedding she tells her younger sister Caroline that their father was not invited because of his affair with a chorus girl. Dexter's gift to Tracy is a model of the sailboat they once sailed.

- The film featured Grace Kelly's final role before she became Princess of Monaco and was released three months after her marriage to Prince Rainier III; in it she wore the Cartier engagement ring Rainier had given her.
- The film was initially nominated at the 1956 Academy Awards for Best Motion Picture Story, even though it was based on the 1940 film The Philadelphia Story and was not eligible; the nominated writers, Elwood Ullman and Edward Bernds, had written a 1955 Bowery Boys film also titled High Society.
- One of the main reasons Sinatra was drawn to the film was a mock-tipsy duet with his boyhood idol Crosby on "Well, Did You Evah!", a song from an earlier Porter show, DuBarry Was a Lady, re-adapted and added at the last minute when it was noted the two singers had no duet to perform.
