Plot summary

Two animated tales share the screen. In the first, J. Thaddeus Toad owns the Toad Hall estate in London, and his mania for one craze after another, lately the motor car, has left his finances in ruin. His friends Water Rat, Mole and Angus MacBadger, who serves as his accountant, try to keep the estate and keep him out of trouble. In the second, Ichabod Crane arrives in Sleepy Hollow as the new schoolmaster and falls for Katrina Van Tassel. The village bully, Brom Bones, wants Katrina for himself, and he tries to frighten the superstitious newcomer with a local tale of the Headless Horseman.

Walt Disney found Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows "awfully corny" and did not want to make it, until story artist James Bodrero read the book and convinced him to put it into production as a single-narrative feature.
Walt Disney shelved The Wind in the Willows after reviewing the footage, saying "the quality was too far below the standard necessary to be successful on the market", even though over 3,000 feet of animation had been completed by then.
Joseph Rosenberg of the Bank of America capped Disney's borrowing at $3.5 million and ordered the studio to make only shorts and finish features already in production such as Dumbo and Bambi; The Wind in the Willows survived only because animation work had already begun.
It was the last of Disney's 1940s package films; the studio returned to full-length animated features with Cinderella in 1950 and did not make another package film until The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh in 1977.
The film lives on at Disney parks: a Sleepy Hollow refreshments café in Liberty Square at the Magic Kingdom, Toad Hall Restaurant in Fantasyland at Disneyland Paris, and Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at Disneyland Park, while the Headless Horseman appears in the Frightfully Fun Parade at Disney California Adventure.
