Dorothy Lamour
Biography
Dorothy Lamour was an American actress and singer who began her career as a big band vocalist before moving to Hollywood in 1936 and signing with Paramount Pictures. Born in New Orleans, she gained fame as Ulah in The Jungle Princess, which launched her association with sarong roles. She became best known for the Road series comedies with Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, starting with Road to Singapore (1940) and continuing through Road to Zanzibar (1941), Road to Morocco (1942), Road to Utopia (1945), and Road to Rio (1947). Her other films included The Hurricane (1937), Johnny Apollo (1940), Dixie (1943), My Favorite Brunette (1947), Variety Girl (1947), and The Greatest Show on Earth (1952). She later appeared in The Road to Hong Kong (1962), Donovan's Reef (1963), Pajama Party (1964), and Creepshow 2 (1987). Lamour also worked in nightclubs, stage, radio, and television, published an autobiography, and in 1965 received a Treasury citation for her war bond sales.

A role that slipped away
Lamour came back to films with a cameo in The Road to Hong Kong (1962). Joan Collins took over as the love interest since Bing Crosby wanted a younger actress, but Bob Hope insisted on Lamour, so her cameo was extended.
First role
In 1936, Lamour appeared in her first Paramount film, College Holiday, playing a bit part as a dancer who went uncredited.
Big break
Herbie Kay, an orchestra leader, spotted Lamour performing at a Chicago talent show at the Hotel Morrison. After an audition the next day, he took her on as a singer for his orchestra.
A first
In 1990, Lamour took the part of Hattie in a Long Beach Civic Light Opera staging of Stephen Sondheim's Follies. It was her last appearance on stage.
