Louis Armstrong
Biography
Louis Armstrong, known as Satchmo, was an American jazz trumpeter and singer whose career spanned five decades. Born and raised in New Orleans, he came to prominence in the 1920s and helped shift jazz from collective improvisation toward solo performance. He followed his mentor King Oliver to Chicago around 1922, then moved to New York City to play with the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra. His Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings, along with his scat singing, made him one of the most influential figures in jazz. He later recorded with Ella Fitzgerald and appeared in films including High Society (1956), Paris Blues (1961) and Hello, Dolly! (1969). He won the Grammy for Best Male Vocal Performance for Hello, Dolly! in 1965 and received a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1972.
