Plot summary
A compilation drawn from fifty years of the studio's musical films marks its anniversary. Dozens of performances are gathered from features made between the 1920s and the 1950s, with archive footage of the performers who appeared in them. Eleven of the studio's stars serve as hosts, each introducing the songs and dances they remember, and the segments are filmed on the backlot in 1973, after the property has been sold and its sets are scheduled for demolition. The hosts walk past decaying sets; one visits the ruins of a train station used in several productions, and another returns to exteriors from his own 1947 musical. Several hosts remark on the lot's crumbling condition during their segments. The title is taken from a song introduced in a 1953 musical.

- Mickey Rooney shot his host segment for That's Entertainment! on the MGM backlot in a single day and was paid $385, the Screen Actors Guild minimum day rate at the time, as he wrote in his 1991 autobiography Life is Too Short.
- The host segments were among the final footage shot on the MGM backlot, which by 1973 looked severely dilapidated because MGM had sold it to developers and the sets were about to be demolished; Fred Astaire and Peter Lawford visited the ruins of their own sets.
- That's Entertainment, Part II, released in 1976 with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly returning as co-hosts, turned out to be the last time the two men danced together on film.
- Liza Minnelli, one of the film's hosts, and Jack Haley Jr., its writer-producer-director, began dating during production of the film and were soon married, a union that lasted five years.
- Gene Kelly is the only individual to host in all four of the That's Entertainment! films, a run that ended with That's Entertainment! III, released in 1994.
