Plot summary
Sue Graham lives in a small town and hopes to become a motion picture star. She travels to Hollywood to escape a marriage. A studio receives a photograph of a different, very attractive girl in place of Sue's picture and offers her a contract on the strength of it. When Sue reaches Hollywood, the error comes to light. The deception was another person's doing, so the studio manager gives her work in the costume department.

- While filming a scene with a lion, the animal broke free and lunged at star Mabel Normand, who fainted in terror. A trainer tried to subdue the lion by jabbing it with a pitchfork but, in the confusion, struck Normand instead.
- The Extra Girl was Mabel Normand's final feature film and her last time working with producer Mack Sennett.
- The film followed earlier movies about the film industry and paved the way for later Hollywood films, including King Vidor's Show People (1928).
