Plot summary
The lieutenant commanding a small British mounted patrol in the Mesopotamian desert is killed by a sniper he never sees, and the sergeant who takes charge has no idea what the patrol's mission was or where they are. He leads the eleven remaining men north, hoping to run into their brigade. At a deserted oasis the men find water, dates and shelter and settle in for the night. A sentry is killed before morning, a second is badly wounded and all the horses are stolen, leaving the patrol stranded. The dead man is buried, his sword set at the head of his grave, while the shooting comes from attackers the men cannot see.

- While filming in the Algodones Dunes, temperatures soared and one of the producers of The Lost Patrol wound up in the hospital with sunstroke.
- According to Boris Karloff's biographer Peter Underwood, the temperature on the Yuma locations could be as hot as 150 °F and the actors were limited to working two hours a day.
- Richard Dix was cast to play the lead in The Lost Patrol but went into another film instead, and Victor McLaglen replaced him in the role.
