Plot summary
As 1899 ends, Jane and Robert Marryot keep their tradition of a midnight toast to the new year in their London townhouse. Robert has enlisted as an officer in the City of London Imperial Volunteers and will soon sail to fight in the Second Boer War, the conflict in which Jane's brother is already serving. The Marryots' butler, Alfred Bridges, enlisted as a private in the same unit. His wife Ellen and her mother, Mrs. Snapper, worry about how Ellen and the baby, Fanny, would manage if he were killed or badly wounded, though Alfred stays optimistic. At midnight the two families drink to the new century. Soon afterward, Jane and Ellen see their husbands off on the same ship, and while Robert is overseas, Jane's friend Margaret Harris stays by her side.
