Arthur Space

Biography

Arthur Space was an American actor whose career covered film, television, and the stage. He was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and began acting studies at Douglass College before working in summer stock and appearing on Broadway in Three Men on a Horse and Awake and Sing. Producer Edward Finney cast him as an urbane hoodlum in Riot Squad, after which he joined MGM and had roles in Rio Rita (1942) and Tortilla Flat (1942). At Fox he played the second lead opposite Laurel and Hardy in The Big Noise (1944). He appeared in Republic chapter plays and later in The Spirit of St. Louis (1957). On television he played veterinarian Doc Weaver on Lassie for 39 episodes and Herbert Brown in National Velvet. He also made appearances on Perry Mason, The Virginian, and The Waltons. His last screen credit was a 1981 episode of Walking Tall.
