Plot summary
Wes Steele reaches Mesa on a horse taken from a stagecoach whose passengers are all dead, meaning to report what he found. The acting sheriff, having seen the coach horses come back, draws on him. Steele shoots first, not fatally, and runs, with townsmen at his heels. He slips in through the back of the bank, where he overhears men talking about the holdup, and blame for it is laid on him. He takes refuge in the cellar of a quarantined house belonging to sheriff Gil Corrigan, who is ill with yellow fever. Gil's daughter Nadine is caring for him. When Nadine collapses from exhaustion, Steele takes over nursing the sheriff.
