Plot summary
Sent west by his father, Judge Fletcher, the lawyer Clay Fletcher travels from South Carolina to El Paso, Texas, to obtain the signature of Judge Henry Jeffers on estate documents. He is fond of Jeffers' daughter, Susan, who owns a hat shop in town. On the road he meets Pesky, a pots-and-pans peddler, and Stagecoach Nellie, a con-woman who steals his wallet. In a saloon Clay watches a drunken Judge Jeffers convict a man of murder in a sham trial. Clay speaks for the defendant and is cited for contempt; unable to pay the fine, he loses his fine clothes at auction. Rancher Don Nacho Vázquez offers him lodging, and Clay learns the convicted man was framed by the landowner Bert Donner and Sheriff La Farge.
