Plot summary
Nora King comes to in a building with no electricity or water and walks out into streets left empty by an evacuation. She trips over the body of a woman who has been killed, then runs into Frank Brooks, who has only just recovered after being knocked out during a robbery the night before. The pair go looking for anyone else still in the city. Music from a piano draws them to a cocktail lounge, where Jim Wilson and Vicki Harris sit drinking; both had been too drunk to leave with the others. As a group of four they walk on through the silent streets and come across a vehicle that will not start. Charles Otis, another person left behind, approaches and says every car he has tried is the same.

- Although a "robot army" is mentioned several times in Target Earth, only one robot was built for the production and it was used in every scene to depict the invasion.
- Target Earth was one of the first films to explore the alien-invasion subgenre, arriving after George Pal's The War of the Worlds and William Cameron Menzies' Invaders from Mars, both released in 1953.
- Robert Roark was given a role in Target Earth because his father was a large investor in the film.
- Though the story is set in Chicago, Target Earth was actually filmed in Los Angeles, where the empty-street scenes were shot in the early morning hours before normal traffic began.
- Target Earth was Herman Cohen's debut as a producer, and he went on to become one of the most prominent B movie producers of the 1960s.
