Plot summary
Sam Talbot owns the Flying U ranch, and news arrives that he died in a fall off a horse. Connie Edwards, a reporter working in St. Louis, hears a rumor that the rancher was killed rather than thrown, so she travels to the area to look into it. She brings her questions to Roy Rogers, who edits the local newspaper, and he sits with her at the reading of the estate. The property goes to Duke Lowery, a boy of twelve who was Talbot's ward. Jan Holloway, Talbot's niece, is unhappy that the ranch passes to the boy. Roy and Connie begin asking how Talbot died.
