Plot summary
Pete Morgan, a handicapped farmer, lives with his sister Ellen and their adopted daughter Meg on an isolated farm. The family keeps to itself, and the nearby town finds them mysterious. Now a teenager, Meg persuades Pete to hire her classmate Nath Storm to help with chores. On his first evening Nath says he will take a shortcut home through the old woods, which Pete forbids anyone to enter. Pete grows agitated and warns that the woods are dangerous and that a haunted house painted red stands among the trees. Nath goes in anyway and comes back spooked by moans and yells. He returns days later and is knocked down into a stream. Nath and Meg agree to search the woods every Sunday, his only day off, for the red house.

- Composer Miklós Rózsa wrote mysterious cues for the theremin, played by Samuel Hoffman, on a score that echoes his music for Spellbound and The Lost Weekend, both of which also leaned on the instrument.
