Plot summary
Dr. John Beck studies bats, and he and his new wife Cathy have finally taken their delayed honeymoon in southeastern California. While touring a cavern, Beck hears strange noises and shoos a fruit bat off the couple's picnic blanket. Inside the cave on a guided tour he hears the sounds again and is bitten on the forehead. Mild seizures follow, and one at a motel jacuzzi is violent enough that he crushes a drinking glass and injures his hand. Dr. Kipling, treating the hand, spots the forehead wound and prescribes the Pasteur treatment against rabies. Beck shrugs the idea off at first, then agrees. The first of twenty inoculations sets off another seizure, and Cathy points out to Kipling that the seizures came before the treatment did.
