Plot summary
Bart Moore is wounded in the stomach as he and Sam Hurley break out of a Carson City prison, and their accomplice Dummy drives them to a ghost town inside the Nevada Proving Ground, where they plan to hide. On the road they take hostages: Kay Garven, who is traveling with Arthur Ashton, and then the reporter Larry Fleming and Dorothy "Dottie" Vale, a dancer with no work. The town's only resident, the prospector Asa Tremaine, is held too. Sam telephones Kay's husband, the doctor Neal Garven, in Los Angeles, threatening to kill her unless he comes to treat Bart. Larry warns that an atomic bomb test is set for the next morning, and Sam says he intends to be gone before it.
