Will Geer
Biography
Will Geer was an American actor and musician. Born in Frankfort, Indiana, he began in tent shows and riverboats. Early stage roles included Mr. Mister in Marc Blitzstein's The Cradle Will Rock and Candy in a stage adaptation of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. Between 1948 and 1951 he made more than a dozen films, including Winchester '73 (1950), in which he played Wyatt Earp, Broken Arrow (1950), and Bright Victory. His film work was sparse in the 1950s, but he starred in Salt of the Earth (1954). He founded the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga, California. In 1964 he earned a Tony Award nomination for 110 in the Shade. Later films included In Cold Blood (1967), where he gave a prosecutor's closing-argument soliloquy, and Jeremiah Johnson (1972), in which he played Bear Claw. That same year he became Zebulon Walton on the CBS series The Waltons, winning an Emmy for the role in 1975.
