Plot summary
Pat Brennan is on his way into town when he stops at a stagecoach way station, where he promises the manager's boy a supply of store-bought candy when he comes back. At a ranch where he used to work, he is offered a bull if he can ride it, and when he fails he has to surrender his horse. Walking and carrying his saddle, he takes a lift from Ed Rintoon, the driver hired to bring the newlyweds Willard and Doretta Mims to their destination. At the station, Frank Usher and his two companions, Chink and Billy Jack, take the coach and everyone aboard. Once Usher hears whose daughter Doretta is, he settles on ransom as the more profitable course.
