Plot summary
In 1832 Jim Deakins is on his own in the Kentucky wilderness when he runs into Boone Caudill, who greets him with hostility, and the pair become friends. They travel to St. Louis to look for Boone's uncle, Zeb Calloway, and find him in jail after a brawl with fur traders. "Frenchy" Jourdonnais, who owns a sailing barge called the Mandan, pays their bail, and Zeb talks him into carrying Jim and Boone along on a trading expedition. Some thirty trappers ride the barge 2,000 miles up the Missouri and on into the Yellowstone to trade with the Blackfoot, competing with the Missouri Fur Company. Teal Eye, a Blackfoot woman in Zeb's care who escaped an enemy tribe years before, is meant to rejoin her father, a chief, so that trade can begin.
