Plot summary

A seedy gambling hall and brothel on a South Seas island is run by Marge, who employs Olga, Bobbie, Mimi and Christine as hostesses. Two deep sea divers, Mike Clancy and Jack Burke, turn up with talk of a steamship that vanished in the Coral Sea six months earlier with three million dollars in gold aboard. Clancy spots two of the guests, Krogan and Johnny Pacific, as that ship's captain and purser. Marge talks the divers into giving her a share, and the party sails to Marana island, where Krogan and Johnny have a plantation. She asks Krogan for shelter, claiming they are hiding from the authorities, while a violent monsoon builds.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Edgar G. Ulmer's Isle of Forgotten Sins was shot at the Corriganville movie ranch in only six days, at a cost of $23,000.
  • The Production Code Administration demanded that the film's nightclub hostesses could not resemble prostitutes, and ordered a change to the original ending, in which Clancy and Marge killed themselves in the water to save Diane.
  • Director Edgar G. Ulmer, a production assistant on F. W. Murnau's Tabu, found 200 miniature trees left over from John Ford's 1937 film The Hurricane and wrote his South Seas story from ideas he had while filming Tabu.
  • Ulmer's contract made him the only producer at PRC able to commission original music instead of using stock cues; composer Leo Erdody, a longtime friend of his, included several Wagnerian themes and songs.
  • The film was the final screen role of German-American actress Betty Amann and the last feature from producer Peter R. Van Duinen's Atlantis Pictures, a unit whose films had bigger budgets than most PRC releases.
  • An underwater sequence in the film was achieved with a marionette, and among its several songs is John Carradine singing "Whiskey Johnny".
