Plot summary
In 1942, Nazi Germany presses neutral Turkey to join the war as its ally. Joe Barton, an American machinery salesman, boards a train at Aleppo, where another passenger, Ana Remzi, asks him to keep an envelope for her, since customs officers search travelers at the Turkish border. He agrees. When he later opens it, he finds maps of Turkey marked with handwritten notes, and he sets out to return her property at her hotel in Ankara. Colonel Robinson's German agents and the Soviet operatives Nikolai and Tamara Zaleshoff are both after those maps, and Barton's errand places him between them.

- Writer W. R. Burnett said George Raft would only make the film if his character became an FBI man; in Eric Ambler's novel the hero was an ordinary salesman caught up in espionage he could not understand.
- In June 1942 Background to Danger became a star vehicle for George Raft, his first Warner Bros. film since Manpower; he had turned down studio films including The Maltese Falcon and All Through the Night.
- Warner Bros. bought the film rights and planned to star Jeffrey Lynn, but he was withdrawn and replaced by Ronald Reagan and Jane Wyman.
