Sarah Edwards
Biography
Sarah Edwards was a Welsh-born American stage and film actress who often played dowagers and spinsters in Hollywood movies of the 1930s and 1940s, usually in minor roles. Born in Glyntraian, Wales, she began her career on the stage and was described in 1916 as a leading actress popular with West End theatergoers. She later settled in the United States and acted in six Broadway plays from 1919 to 1931, mostly comedies, including The Merry Malones by George M. Cohan. Her early film work included the 1929 musical Glorifying the American Girl, in which she played a mercenary mother. Moving to Hollywood in the mid-1930s, she took small, often uncredited character parts in about 190 films before retiring in 1951. She was known for playing the imperious mother of Mary Hatch in It's a Wonderful Life (1946) and appeared in The Shop Around the Corner (1940), The Bishop's Wife (1947), and Shadow of a Doubt (1943). She died in 1965.
