Plot summary
Joe Beck works for an oil company in the Honduran jungle when word comes that his grandfather has died in Texas and left him $200,000. In a nearby port, the estate's executor, attorney Daniel Bergstrom, gives him the news. On his way back to the jungle, a man follows him and attacks him with a knife, trying to steal his identity papers. Beck takes passage on the first ship leaving port, the Merman, carrying the papers he needs in Galveston. Aboard are steward Dawson, Captain Saul, his mate Buck Harris, and cabaret artist Nita Paxton. Beck receives veiled threats and warnings, and an accident on deck nearly kills him.
