Plot summary
Warren Quimby is the night manager of a drugstore and lives above it with his wife Claire, who is openly unfaithful. She leaves him for a wealthy man named Barney Deager. Quimby visits Deager's beachfront home to plead for Claire's return, but she refuses and Deager beats him. Back at the store, Quimby's employee Freddie remarks that he would have killed the man. Humiliated, Quimby creates a second identity: Paul Sothern, a cosmetics salesman, complete with contact lenses, flashier clothes, and a rented apartment. There he meets Mary Chanler, a neighbor, and begins dating her. All the while he is preparing to murder Deager without leaving evidence.
