Teresa Wright

Biography

Teresa Wright was an American actress who grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey and took up acting in school plays after seeing Helen Hayes on stage. She apprenticed at the Wharf Theater in Provincetown, then took over the role of Emily in Our Town and spent two years in Life with Father, where Samuel Goldwyn spotted her. Her first film, The Little Foxes (1941), earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress; she won that award for Mrs. Miniver (1942) and was also nominated for Best Actress for The Pride of the Yankees (1942). She starred in Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt (1943) and in The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), and later appeared in The Men (1950), Somewhere in Time (1980) and The Rainmaker (1997). She received three Emmy Award nominations and a Drama Desk Award.

Wright was awarded a scholarship to the Wharf Theater, located in Provincetown, Massachusetts. She spent two summers there serving as an apprentice.
About the name
After finishing high school in 1938, Wright moved to New York, where she shortened her name to Teresa Wright and worked as an understudy to Dorothy McGuire and Martha Scott in Thornton Wilder's Our Town.
