Patricia Collinge
Biography
Patricia Collinge was an Irish-American actress and writer who began performing on the London stage as a child in 1904. Born in Dublin, she moved with her mother to the United States in 1907 and soon took supporting stage parts. She originated the role of Pollyanna Whittier, toured in several plays, and in 1939 was in the original Broadway cast, playing Birdie Hubbard in The Little Foxes. She repeated the role in The Little Foxes (1941), earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Her other screen work included Shadow of a Doubt (1943) and The Nun's Story (1959), and she appeared in Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. She also wrote the play Dame Nature and contributed to the screenplay of Lifeboat (1944). Her final stage appearance came in 1952.

Collinge made her first stage appearance in 1904 at the Garrick Theatre in London, in Little Black Sambo and Little White Barbara.

Collinge rewrote the garage scene between Teresa Wright and Macdonald Carey for Shadow of a Doubt after Alfred Hitchcock and the actors disliked the dialogue, and Hitchcock used her version in the film.

Collinge adapted a French drama by André Birabeau into the play Dame Nature, which appeared in 1938. She also wrote short stories for The New Yorker.
