Sounds of Silence (1989) on Netflix

Plot summary

A photographer in Southern California, Peter Mitchell learns that Annie Holst, a relative he never met, has left him a palatial estate in Sweden. He and his girlfriend Sarah bring her deaf son Dennis along to see the place and to weigh keeping it against selling it. On arrival, the family gets a chilly reception from the locals whenever Annie's name comes up. Beside the mansion stands a derelict orphanage that once housed children, and the village will not talk about it. Young Dennis is drawn to the building, and Peter begins asking how the children there died, a question that reaches back some fifty years.
