Plot summary
A coelacanth, a species unchanged for millions of years, arrives at Dunsfield University, where Dr. Donald Blake teaches science and calls the fish a living fossil. Examining the specimen, Blake cuts himself on its teeth and his bloodied hand goes into the water that held it. He tells Molly Riordan he feels unwell and remembers nothing of the drive home with her. Blake's fiancée, Madeline Howard, is the daughter of the university president, and Lieutenant Mike Stevens and Sergeant Eddie Daniels of the Dunsfield police are looking into a deformed handprint and a tie clasp. Blake has told his students that people inherit ape-like instincts and must control them.
